Opening Exhibition

In der Zappanale Exhibition 2018 werden wir Euch das umfangreiche musikalische Schaffen des Power Trios Warren Cuccurullo / Patrick O’Hearn / Terry Bozzio vorstellen. Ihr kennt noch Duran Duran und die Missing Persons? … Sind auch dabei. Ebenso wie die Zusammenarbeit von Warren mit Arthur Barrow und Tommy Mars in einer Free Jazz Formation. Auch Terrys Scheiben in Kooperation mit Herbie Hancock, The Knack, Jeff Beck oder Tony Levin (um nur ein paar wenige zu nennen) werden hier zu sehen sein. Dass Patrick nicht nur auf Zappa-Scheiben oder Solo unterwegs war, zeigt sein musikalisches Schaffen mit z. B. Ravi Shankar, John Hiatt oder Richard Marx.

Ein echtes Highlight werden die Bilder von Bill Gubbins sein: Er hat Frank Zappa während der Hot Rats Aufnahmen abgelichtet und ein Buch daraus erstellt. Die Fotos sind bislang unveröffentlicht und wir sind selbst schon ganz gespannt.

Unter dem Motto „Great Googly Moogly in Oil“ stellt der Künstler Olaf Roesler einige seine großformatigen Bilder aus.

Da wir mit der nun schon zehnten Exhibition ein kleines Jubiläum feiern, halten wir zudem eine Rückschau auf Trauriges, Bizarres, Witziges, Erstaunliches…

Fest etabliert haben sich die Special Events auf der kleinsten Zappanalebühne. Was Euch und uns viel Spaß machte, wird am Freitag mit Gabba Zappa Hey! seine Fortsetzung finden. Freunde, es wird laut, schnell und „really zappaesque“. Anschließend bringt uns Fried Dähn mit seinem Cello wieder etwas runter. 

Am Samstag habt Ihr Gelegenheit, Pauline Butcher Fragen zu stellen und ihren Erzählungen zu lauschen. Pauline war von 1968 bis 1972 Zappas Sekretärin und organisierte den Fan Club „United Mutations“. Nette Anekdote am Rande: Zappa engagierte sie wegen ihrer völligen Unkenntnis der damals zeitgenössischen Musik. Als er mitbekam, dass sie Eric Clapton fragte, was für ein Instrument er spielt, hatte sie den Job. Danach wird es musikalisch weiter gehen … lasst Euch überraschen!

Am Sonntag werden Jogi Nestel und Klaus Küting nach ihrem Auftritt mit Fried Dähn & Skin of Clazz  Ausschnitte aus ihrem Duo-Konzertprogramm mit kleinem Instrumentarium, d.h. Marimba mit kleinem Drum-Set und Marimba mit Tenor-Steel-Pan spielen. Klar, dass auch ein wenig Zappa auf dem Programm steht. Spannend wird es dann bei einem der fundierten Vorträge von Frank Wonneberg. Er schließt damit wie in jedem Jahr unser Special-Event-Programm.

Wir freuen uns auf Euch und ein paar ereignisreiche Tage Am Markt 3, im Zentrum von Bad Doberan. Die Türen der Ausstellung öffnen sich am Mittwoch um 14:00 für drei Stunden. Donnerstag bis Sonntag ist die Ausstellung von jeweils 10:00  bis 14:00 Uhr geöffnet, der Eintritt ist frei.

A Cleveland Ohio native, born to Thelma and Charles Guanerra (why dad changed it to Gardner I'll never understand.) Started musically at age 7 with piano lessons from Elmira Snodgrass for 50 cents a lesson. Until the age of 12 I sucked my thumb and then replaced it with a clarinet, tenor sax, bassoon and finally flute. In 1954 my professional career started by being featured on sax and flute on Roulette Records Western T.V. themes. I then recorded and toured with Eartha Kitt, Tim Buckley, Frank Zappa, Little Richard, Van Morrison and the 4 Winds Ensemble. From Bassoonist with the Cleveland Philharmonic in 1950 to all the woodwinds with the Grandmothers in 1994 with a few stops inbetween like playing experimental music in 1962 with Don Preston, Frank Zappa and my brother Buzz in Don's studio to Geronimo Black with Jim in 1970. Also the Montage Trio & Quartet and one year of cullinary cooking at L.A. Trade Tech. I delved into many musical forms starting with boogie woogie and dixieland to classical and jazz to latin and fusion and finally avant-guarde. But I still love spontaneous improv and I'm secretly joined at the hip with roomate Don Preston!

I grew up in Detroit Michigan where they make cars. At 12 years I was thrown out of school for hypnotising several students and a nun. I was also learning magic. The nuns used to beat my hands with a big ruler when I made mistakes playing the piano. Because of this weird treatment I began to like strange and dissonant music. I went to Trieste Italy in the army and shared a room with Buzz Gardner. At that time I wrote a number of chamber and orchestral works and later lost them. I learned to play the contra-bass. After returning to Detroit I insterted all the pistons in every fourth Dodge auto. Played for one year with Elvin Jones at the West End Cafe on bass. Moved to L.A. Did my stint with the Mothers and became romantically involved with 40 teenagers. Did a magic show at the Whiskey A Go Go. Later did a show at Moon Zappa's 6th birthday party.

Don Preston was quite possibly the first person to utilize synthesizers in live performance with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Today, four decades after having built 'analog synthesizers' from scratch before most people had heard of such things, Preston is a living legend and a pioneer in music. Preston recorded and toured with Frank Zappa and the Mothers from 1966-1974 and can be heard on such classic albums as 'Absolutely Free', 'We're Only In It For The Money', 'Cruising With Ruben & the Jets', 'Uncle Meat', 'Burnt Weeny Sandwich', 'Weasels Ripped My Flesh', 'Fillmore East - June 1971', 'Just Another Band From LA', 'Waka/Jawaka', 'The Grand Wazoo' and 'Roxy & Elsewhere'. Along with Frank Zappa, Preston has worked with a number of well known music artists such as Carla Bley, The Residents, Flo & Eddie, Elvin Jones, Meredith Monk and Lou Rawls to name a few as well as scoring and recording part of the soundtrack for 'Apocalypse Now'. Preston also records and tours with former Mothers of Invention member Bunk Gardner as the Don & Bunk Show as well as Zappa alumni Napoleon Murphy Brock and Roy Estrada in the Grande Mothers Reinvented. Robert Moog, the father of the Moog synthesizer, was reportedly shocked by some of the sounds Preston was able to produce on the instrument. He even was quoted saying that Preston's solo on Zappa's "Waka/Jawaka" was the "best Moog solo ever recorded". (2010)

In 2002 the GMOI gathered for the first time to rehearse the music of the MAESTRO for a 10 year commemoration of his passing. It was to be a one time event at the Gewendhaus in Leipzig Germany, recorded for Warner Bros in EU and filmed for the ARTE CHANNEL. Since then the band has gone on to perform over 400 concerts in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland USA, and Wales proving THAT THEY STILL CAN DO THAT ON STAGE........

Bonnen, Aigui & Burghaus (DE/RUS)

Bereits vor fünf Jahren bestritten Dietmar Bonnen (vocals, piano, organ), Alexei Aigui (violin) und Lothar Burghaus (clarinets) das Auftakt-Konzert für die Zappanale in der Hamburger Katharinenkirche unter dem Motto „Dylan, Hendrix, Zappa spielen für Bach“. Dieses Jahr kommen sie erstmals nach Bad Doberan.

Der Komponist, Interpret und gelernte Kirchenorganist Dietmar Bonnen, Jahrgang 1958, studierte Musik und Kunst in Köln und Düsseldorf. Die Verbindung von Neuer Musik, Rock und Jazz führte früh zur Einspielung von John Cage-Musik wie „Five“. Für den Westdeutschen Rundfunk (WDR) schuf Bonnen die Soundscape-Komposition „Beijing“ im chinesischen Peking und Köln. Neueinspielungen auf CDs seines Kölner Musikverlages „Obst“ reichen von Hildegard von Bingen bis zu Frank Zappa.

Der Violinist Alexei Aigui, Jahrgang 1971, aus Moskau, Russland studierte an der Ippolitov-Ivanov Musik-Akademie und gründete das Ensemble für Neue Musik 4‘33‘‘. Teilnahme an vielfältigen internationalen Jazz- und Ballett-Festivals ebenso wie Auftragsarbeiten zur Neuvertonung von Filmklassiker wie „Metropolis“.

Dietmar Bonnen spielte sein erstes gemeinsames Konzert mit dem Geiger und Komponisten Alexei Aigui 1994 in Moskau. Im selben Jahr gründete Alexei sein Ensemble 4‘33‘‘, benannt nach der Komposition von John Cage. Es war das erste russische Ensemble, das Werke von La Monte Young, Toru Takemitsu, Morton Feldman und Terry Riley aufführte.

Als Duo haben sie CDs mit eigenen Versionen von Musik so unterschiedlicher Komponisten wie Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix und Kurt Weill produziert. Außerdem bilden sie eine Hälfte des Russian-German Composers Quartet. Und in Dietmars Ensemble de Plainte ist Alexei der Geigensolist.

Ein Schwerpunkt von Alexeis kompositorischer Arbeit liegt im Bereich der Filmmusik. So hatte Dietmar Bonnen das Vergnügen, bei einigen seiner Soundtracks als Sänger mitzuwirken. Eine Titelmusik, die Version eines sovietischen Schlagers der 80er Jahre »Don't Cry«, wurde in Russland zu einem kleinen Underground-Hit. Alexeis Vater ist der russisch-tschuwaschische Dichter Gennady Aigui.

Der Klarinettist und Saxophonist Lothar Burghaus, Jahrgang 1969, arbeitet bereits seit 1995 regelmäßig in verschiedenen Ensembles mit Dietmar Bonnen zusammen. Außerdem war der Mediziner Mitglied des Kölner Saxophon Quartetts „Brassless“ und des einzig wahren Blasorchesters „Dicke Luft“. Burghaus ist ebenfalls Mitglied der Arf-Society.
