Zappanale #19 - 2008

"Frank Zappa's music lives on on his records, in the fact that we hear his music. But much more is still alive Frank Zappa in this festival, in you who come to the Zappanale. It is only through you that the Zappanale and with it the memory of Frank Zappa, his spirit and his music come alive." Fritz Rau stood on the festival stage at the opening of the 19th Zappanale and, in his words to the assembled audience, was still deeply impressed by the man he had met 40 years earlier when he organized his first tour. And whose music drew freaks and fans to Bad Doberan for the 19th time.

The Zappanale program was more extensive than ever before. Opposite the large main stage there was a second small one at a suitable distance. Concerts on both stages alternated without a break, which promised constant music, but filled the recording memory beyond measure over the course of the three days. More or less invisible helpers kept the festival buzzing, this year's grandiose line-up promised a lot of good entertainment. The preparation was almost perfect, minor grievances prompted immediate reconsideration. The team around Zappanale boss Wolfhard Kutz, President Thomas Dippel and merchandise boss Thomas Reinicke is well attuned and, in addition to everything they do, knows how to enjoy the bands and festival atmosphere, as did the almost 6,800 guests who made the pilgrimage to Bad Doberan in 2008, the person and to pay homage to the music of Frank Zappa and to edify yourself with pleasure.

The large campground called "Sun Camp" was surprisingly full, the "Green Camp" no less. Freaks came to the Zappanale from all over the world, and once again only those who sat quietly and alone in their garden and knew who they were walking in front of the Zappanale stage were disappointed. If you weren't there, you couldn't enjoy it.
The weather, which was rather badly announced, was perfect, not too hot; Always surrounded by a cool breeze, the assembled freaks stood in front of the stage in non-stop sunshine, while earthquakes, forest fires, storms, thunderstorms, floods and scorching heat prevailed in the USA. FZ had relaxedly joined the Mecklenburg weather gods and let loose the angry threads over his family's house...

The organizing background weasel was almost too perfect this year, everything went smoothly and like clockwork. It was immediately noticeable that the Zappanale is not led by a young bunch of chaos who first have to earn their spurs and play with dropouts, mistakes and glitches in order to have a festival atmosphere for themselves. No, the executive floor works quietly and prudently, keeps an eye on everything and thinks about all the little things. Zappanale 40 will probably run technically without the slightest drop-out, we're all in wheelchairs in front of the stage, and the nurses' skirts are so short...

The festival atmosphere was characterized by the usual and more CD, LP, mead and food stalls, the stones, yes, they are still lying in front of the stage on the meadow, are not in the sun crumbles. Nevertheless, those who were there could enjoy the grandiose concert marathon. And beer, folks, there was beer too.

After Fritz Rau and Jürgen Schwab gave a multimedia lecture in Bad Doberan's Kamptheater on Thursday, and the day before the Americans Bogus Pomp and Napoleon Murphy Brock gave a concert in Hamburg's St. Katharinen Kirche for the had held the organ of the house (which has to be restored and once wrested impressive words from the old master Johann Sebastian Bach), the festival began on Friday on the racecourse with great concerts.

Every one of you has to hang this year's program (like all the previous ones) framed in gold in your living room, which is why I am spared the complete list of volumes. The highlights, from my subjective point of view, have to be mentioned.
On Friday it was the Belgian jazz rockers The Wrong Object, the Polish prog metal band Inducti and Bogus Pomp, who delivered an excellent, enchanting acoustic set , which was dripping with jazz and did the master FZ credit. Terrific!

Afterwards, some festival-goers were so impressed by the performance that they staggered through the countryside in a daze, while in their head the excitement sucked all their physical energy (and that had nothing to do with beer, of course!) .
On Saturday Panzerballett were on stage after breakfast. At 12 p.m. Way too early! But the boys knew how to awaken and captivate the audience. Jan Zehrfeld and his congenial guitarist
